Solar, battery and EV in one system
A family wanted to charge their EV from their roof. We designed solar, battery and charger together so daytime generation is stored and used to charge overnight.
This household had already decided on an EV and wanted the car to run, as far as possible, on their own electricity. Rather than treat solar, battery and charger as three separate purchases, we designed them as a single system from day one.
The 4.1kWp array was sized against the family’s actual half-hourly usage and the roof’s south-west orientation. A 10kWh battery banks the daytime surplus, and the EV charger is integrated so it preferentially tops the car up from solar — or from stored, off-peak power overnight.
The installation is MCS certified, which qualified the family for Smart Export Guarantee payments on what they send back to the grid. With domestic solar and battery currently zero-rated for VAT, the numbers stacked up considerably better than they’d expected.
