Consumer units
Consumer unit upgrades that make your home EV-ready
A modern board is the foundation everything else plugs into. We replace tired fuse boxes with RCBO-protected, surge-protected metal units — and leave proper capacity for your charger, solar and battery.
What's included
- Replacement of your old board with a modern metal-clad consumer unit
- Individual RCBO protection on every circuit (no whole-house trips)
- Type 2 surge protection (SPD) to protect sensitive electronics
- Main protective bonding checks and upgrades where needed
- Spare ways left for future EV, solar or battery circuits
- Full testing and an Electrical Installation Certificate
The consumer unit is the part of your electrics everything else depends on. If it’s an old plastic board with a couple of trip switches, it’s almost certainly the thing standing between you and a safe EV charger or solar install.
We replace tired boards with modern metal-clad units that protect each circuit individually, add surge protection for your sensitive electronics, and leave deliberate spare capacity for the upgrades you’ll want next.
Protection on every circuit
We fit an RCBO per circuit rather than one shared RCD. That means a fault on a single circuit trips only that circuit — your fridge, freezer, broadband and alarm stay on while you sort out the garden socket.
Surge protection as standard
Type 2 surge protection devices guard everything plugged into your home against spikes from the grid and nearby lightning strikes. With EV chargers and solar inverters now common, it’s inexpensive protection for some genuinely expensive equipment.
Done to standard, certified and notified
Every upgrade is tested fully, certified with an Electrical Installation Certificate, and notified to Building Standards. We check earthing and main bonding as part of the job, and if anything needs bringing up to standard we include it in the fixed price rather than surprising you on the day.
How the install works
- 01
Inspection
We check the condition of your existing installation, earthing and bonding before quoting.
- 02
Fixed quote
A clear price including any remedial work needed to bring the installation up to standard.
- 03
Upgrade day
A single-day swap in most homes, with power restored the same day and every circuit labelled.
- 04
Test & certify
Full testing, an Electrical Installation Certificate and Building Standards notification.
Frequently asked questions
Why upgrade if my current board still works?
Older boards often lack RCD protection and individual circuit trips, so one fault takes out the whole house. A modern board protects each circuit separately and adds surge protection — and it's frequently what's holding up an EV or solar install.
What is an RCBO and why does it matter?
An RCBO combines overload and earth-fault protection on a single circuit. Fit one per circuit and a fault on, say, the garden lights no longer plunges your whole home — including the freezer — into darkness.
Do I need surge protection?
BS 7671 now expects surge protection in most homes. It guards EV chargers, solar inverters, TVs and computers against damage from grid spikes and nearby lightning — cheap insurance for expensive kit.
Will you sort out any issues you find?
Yes. If earthing or bonding needs attention, we'll explain it plainly and include it in the fixed quote rather than springing surprises on the day.
